Nakase House

The Nakase House was built in 1887 as the home of a merchant named Yoda Naokichi, who gained his wealth through his drapery business, Yoda Naokichi Drapery. As the traditional yago or “house name” of the drapery was Nakase, the house is currently known as the Nakase House. In 1988, the estate, consisting of a main building, an earthen warehouse, and five other buildings were purchased by the town of Matsuzaki, and the main building was opened to the public as a folk museum. The construction, from the timbers to the delicate carvings, and to the gold fittings, shows off the wealth of the Yodas, allowing us to glimpse how a wealthy merchant family would have lived back then.
