Koina Tiger Dance
Every year, this event is held as a shrine festival at Koina Kinomiya Shrine, on the evening before the Autumn Moon-Viewing Festival (Tsukimi) on the 14th of the 8th month in the old lunar calendar. This tiger dance is said to represent part of the Battles of Coxinga, a bunraku puppet play written by the famous Edo-period playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon. In the play, when Watonai ventures into a bamboo forest, he encounters a great tiger, and after a great battle, manages to take it alive, returning home with it. As this is a rare type of dance in Japan, it has been registered as a Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
