Iwashina School

This school, completed in 1880, features namako latticed plaster walls and temple-style architecture. The oldest school building in the Izu area, the combination of Matsuzaki’s traditional architectural methods and Western architectural styles has created a masterpiece of wood construction. This impressive building in the Western style is one of the oldest in Japan, after the former Mutsuzawa School in Kofu and the former Kaichi School in Matsumoto, and was registered as an Important Cultural Property by the national government in 1975.
