Clouds and Dragon Painting in the Jokan-ji Temple

This is the work of Irie Chohachi, who gained fame during the Edo period as a master plasterer. Born in Matsuzaki, Chohachi left for Edo at age 23, where he studied painting in the Kano School style, training in carving and sculpture. He applied these skills to plasterwork, using plaster and trowels to paint pictures in a unique style that he perfected. This painting, along with Pair of Flying Angels, has been registered by Shizuoka Prefecture as Tangible Cultural Properties in 2011.
